Located at 400 mts asl in Greve in Chianti, deep in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, Vecchie Terre di Montefili is recognized as one of the historical producers of traditional Chianti Classico made entirely from the native Sangiovese variety. The viticultural background of the estate goes back to the XII century, when the Montefili an aristocratic family from Florence acquired a feud in the area and constructed the eponymous Montefili fortress.
At the beginning of the XIII century the estate was donated to Badia a Passignano, a Benedictine abbey, and new vineyards and olive orchards were soon set by the monks. The Montefili estate has been managed by the Badia a Passignano abbey up until the late 1970 s', when current owner Roccaldo Acuti seized up the property and converted the central farmhouse into a modern winery.
The cellar was equipped with electricity, air conditioning, stainless steel vats and new casks of Slavonia oak. Vecchie Terre di Montefili consists today of 24 Ha of vineyard land intermixed with olive groves and cypresses, all concentrated in the commune of Greve in Chianti, one of Chianti Classico's highest vine sites. The native Sangiovese variety is largely predominant throughout the vineyards, along with a few rows of Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc.
Greve in Chianti is noted for producing crisp, fragrant and slightly austere Sangiovese, thanks to a combination of favorable geo-climatic factors: poor, compact soil [Galestro and Filaretto soil units], high altitude, intense daylight and wide-ranging day/night temperature variation. The resulting Sangiovese and Chianti Classico are medium-bodied, never high in alcohol, framed by salty acidity and reminiscent of ripe red cherry, violets, scorched earth and rosemary.
Vecchie Terre Montefili estate vineyards and olive orchards are farmed with the biologic protocol 'lotta integrata' and the entire production process is supervised by Vittorio Fiore, a noted expert in traditional Sangiovese winemaking.
