Emidio Pepe - Cerasuolo D' Abruzzo Triple A 2015 Ml. 750
Organic Red Wine/Red Wine/Red/Vignaioli Indipendenti
The company was founded in the late nineteenth century when Emidio Pepe, grandfather of the present namesake, found in the Torano hills the ideal terroir for the two main Abruzzo grapes. In 1944 his son, Giuseppe, was already known for the quality of his bulk wine. Twenty years later, it was his son's turn, today known as Ustì, to inherit the land and the knowledge to raise the Trebbiano and the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo to the test of the bottle.
Since that 1964, the brand Pepe has become the symbol of the territorial expression and longevity, thanks to the empirical and tireless activity of Emidio and of his wife Rosa, who gave him three daughters and supported him both in family life and work. The business has been run within the family over the years, never forgetting the traditions and the know-how of the past.
For a long time Emidio's daughters Daniela and Sofia, with the help of his granddaughter Chiara, have been putting into practice the secrets learned from the parents, to preserve the natural heritage, following the organic way even before the institutional certification and before its trendiness. Today the winery owns 36 acres of land grown following the organic and biodynamic techniques.
36 Acres of Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, with a little Pecorino. The growing system is both pergola and rows in order to have balanced vintages each year. The leaves in the pergola protect the grapes when there is too much sun while the rows let the soil breathe when it rains a lot.
The workings are almost non-existent because we want to preserve the life and the soil biodiversity. Earthworms, butterflies, spiders and fireflies which populate our soil testify the absence of fertilizers.
The pergola vines are the oldest, more than 40 years old and an average yield is 90/100 quintals per hectare. Their roots can go 2 to 3 meters deep and guarantee the nourishment even in the most difficult periods. We treat the plants only with natural products: mine sulfur and copper water as whatever you give to them comes back to you: first in the grapes and then in the glass.
The Cerasuolo is obtained from 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo grape vinified ?in white?. This means that the grapes are crushed by feet and the must ferments without the skins. The result is a pleasant wine, of a cherry pink color pretty intense, fruity, smooth and delicate. It a dynamic and versatile wine, that pairs very well with a lot of different kinds of foof: from the pizza to the fish brodetto, from the cod to the pasta, perfect to drink it fresh in the warm summer nights. It's the only one between our wines that is not supposed to age.
