The total surface area of the Pian delle Vigne estate is 184 hectares (470 acres), 65 of which (over 160 acres) are planted to vines; there are two hectares (five acres) of olive groves and 117 hectares of woods.
Vineyard
The total surface area of the Pian delle Vigne estate is 184 hectares (470 acres), 65 of which (over 160 acres) are planted to vines; there are two hectares (five acres) of olive groves and 117 hectares of woods. The entire vineyard is planted to Sangiovese (known locally as Brunello), the altitude varies from 130 meters to 250 meters (430 to 825 feet) above sea level, and the exposure is prevalently southeast. The soil is principally clayey and calcareous and is rich in stones.
Approximately half of the vineyard was planted in 1996-1997, and these vines are now in excellent productive balance and give wines of very high quality indeed; these older vineyards have
been joined by 33 new hectares (82 acres) which will produce the new wines of the estate utilizing five Sangiovese clones from Montalcino along with Antinori selections of their finest Sangiovese. As a result of the temperate climate which prevails at Montalcino, the grapes in this township ripen a week or two earlier than those in Chianti Classico and this allows harvesting to begin in mid-September. In addition, the particular mineral richness of the soil give an even greater savor and elegance to the tannins of the wines, a quality which becomes even more perceptible with age
