The La Crotta di Vegneron Cooperative was set up in 1980 with 25 partners. Today it counts 70 partners and it has reached a production of 200,000 bottles. The Cooperative collects the grapes coming from two important areas which give the name to the Chambave Denomination of Origin (area which includes the municipalities of Châtillon, Saint Vincent, Saint-Denis and Verrayes) and Nus (which includes the municipalities of Quart and Fénis).
Ours is first and foremost a history of people who are deeply rooted in this beautiful alpine region, generations of skilful "viticulteurs" whose objective has always been to get the best quality out of their vines and their sloped terraces. La Crotta di Vegneron pursues the ancient tradition of the "campagnards", whose strength lies in the relationship between autochthonous vines and terroir.
La Crotta di Vegneron's wines and grappas emanate the spirit of the Aosta Valley mountains thanks to ancient autochthonous vines, traditional vines cultivated with great skill and pride and which are respectful of the multifaceted terroir. Our cellar is in Chambave, a small hamlet in the Aosta Valley bordering west with France and north with Switzerland. The winegrowers who belong to the Cooperative often manage small plots located in a territory where the mechanization of the vineyard is not always possible, and therefore tend to have higher management costs.
The Aosta Valley DOC wines we produce come from southward facing, fragmented vineyards set on steep mountain slopes. In our Cooperative 35% of total production is made out of red grapes and 65% out of white grapes. We produce a complete range of 15 wines with Denomination Valle d'Aosta DOC, 3 sparkling wines branded Quatremillemètres Vins d'altitude and a complete range of aperitif wines, dessert wines and meditation wines. La Crotta di Vegneron's philosophy centres on the enhancement of autochthonous vines such as Petit Rouge, Fumin, Vien de Nus, in addition to the traditional ones as Muscat de Chambave and Nus Malvoisie. The company also produces wines with the more international vines as Pinot Noir, Gamay and Müller Thurgau which adapt very well to our soils and to our climate.
La Crotta di Vegneron's vineyards are located at quite a high altitude, ranging from 500 to 850 m.a.s.l.; they enjoy a special microclimate, with little rainfall, high average temperature in the day and rather low temperatures in the summer nights. These morphological and climatic characteristics favour the ripening of the grapes and limit parasitic attacks, hence very few treatments are needed, and where necessary, the treatments made are respectful of the environment.
La Crotta di Vegneron's Aosta Valley wines embody all the characteristics of the vines they come from, be they autochthonous or international. Passion, together with the quality of a production process which is respectful of the mountain environmento give rise to 18 types of wine sorted into the following categories: varietal wines, terroir wines, selections, passito wines and sparkling wined branded Quatremillemètres Vins d'altitude. These wines are typical of the Aosta Valley and have been made to please every palate on any occasion. They range from red wines for daily consumption to dessert wines, including the great Red wines which are a must in any wine cellar. Elegant aromas, wine-making techniques which highlight elegant and fruity taste, wines with the characteristics of the terroir, strong wines, wines with different, pleasant scents, wines with surprising structure and complexity and finally comes the magic of our two passito wines, Nus Malvoisie Flétri Nonus and Chambave Moscato Passito Prieuré, nectars with a rich and ancient history. In recent years we have expanded our range with sparkling wines: VS Refrain® made with the Martinotti method, 4478 Nobleffervescence made with the Classic method and Rougeffervescence made with the Ancestral method. The range of products of La Crotta di Vegneron really is very vast. The wines of the Cooperative result from a passion which is centuries long and which is now strengthened by innovation, albeit in the wake of tradition. They represent the strength the spirit and the taste of our mountain territory.
