Benanti is a historic Etna family from the late nineteenth century, when Giuseppe Benanti began the production of wines in the countryside of Viagrande. A hundred have passed when the grandson took up the reins of the entrepreneurial activity. In 1990 he began the production of quality wines such as Pietramarina, from Carricante grapes, which after almost thirty years continues to reap success. Giuseppe's sons, Salvino and Antonio, freshly appointed as President of the Consortium for the Protection of Etna Doc Wines, reap the benefits. The vineyards of Milo, on the east side of the volcano, and that of Rovittello, on the north side in the municipality of Castiglione, were soon added to the original Viagrande farm, where the company is based. Benanti intends to enhance the concept of the district as an expression of the different territories of Etna. With this in mind, the Contrada Monte Serra was born in 2019, the fruit of Viagrande grapes located at 470 meters above sea level. In 2020 the Etna Rosso and Bianco wines were born from the Contrada Cavaliere vineyards, located in the municipality of Santa Maria Licodia. Here, at 950 meters above sea level, the Carricante is home and 50 meters below are the two Nerellis. It does not end there, however, because next year two other wines will see the light, a red and a white. The first comes from the Contrada Dafara Galluzzo, near the Rovittello vineyard, the second comes from the Contrada Rinazzo, in the countryside of Milo.
