This wine takes it’s name from the 2 meters high and 52 Km long wall surrounding (Barco Reale) that the Medici had raised in 1626 to delimit the area and one can say that this has been the first natural reserve of Italy. Cosimo III of the Medici considered the Barco Reale in the Medici’s Law that he made in 1716, as the border of the Carmignano wine production.
Barco Reale is made of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.
The harvest of each wine species is made separately and it goes from the end of September to the first decade of October The alcoholic fermentation is made in large stainless steel tins, in order to allow a wider contact between peels and liquid so that there will be a better extraction of the tannins and colours. After Malolatic fermentation in stainless steel, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon are assembled together. The wine can be sold in Autumn of the following year, so that it suggests a fruity pleasant wine both for its body and elegance as the Carmignano Wines are.
Barco Reale should be served at a temperature of 17 – 18 °C in a glass suitable for red wines so that the freshness and fruitful taste are exhaled.
