Named for the region's ancient seaside towers overlooking the Adriatic Sea, Tormaresca adds a fresh dimension to Italy's world-class wine landscape. Indeed, it is the only producer with vineyards in both of Puglia's elite winegrowing regions.
The Bocca di Lupo estate is located within the Castel del Monte DOC, while the Masseria Maìme estate is in the Salento area, the pulsing heart of this vibrant winemaking region. Tormaresca leads Puglia's modern renaissance by combining classic winemaking with the latest viticulture techniques to create exceptional wines just waiting to be discovered. All Tormaresca wines are crafted with 100% estate-grown fruit.
Bocca di Lupo occupies 250 acres of chalky soil at an elevation of 800 feet above sea level in Murgia, near the volcano Vulture. Blessed with abundant sunshine and warm temperatures, the vineyard's Chardonnay, Aglianico, Fiano, Moscato, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes flourish, producing wines with fresh, vibrant, and elegant flavors.
Masseria Maìme estate's 625 acres extend over half a mile along the Adriatic coast, providing an ideal growing environment for Negroamaro, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Fiano. Together, these estates enable Tormaresca to cultivate both exceptional native and international varietals in the heart of Puglia.
Bocca Di Lupo
The estate is located in the countryside of Minervino Murge in Apulia, the DOC region of Castel del Monte, an area well known for the beauty of its wild, untamed landscape and for its devotion to the sport of hunting.
Historical admirers of the area include Federick II of Swabia who was passionate about hunting here. The vines grow at about 300 meters above sea level in The Murgia, an area with challenging climatic conditions that throughout time have always forced its inhabitants to work with great devotion. Harsh winters, temperatures that fluctuate dramatically, deep ravines, thick fog often covering the vineyards and especially its proximity to the ancient volcano Vulture are only some of the characteristics of this territory that rewards patient hard work with precious harvests. Grape varieties cultivated in this region are Aglianico, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fiano Puglia, Moscato Reale and Nero di Troia
Bocca di Lupo winery is gracefully set within the estate's 140 hectares of vineyards; its fortified stone structure and bright white walls made of ttough ricks were built upholding ancient building traditions typical of manor farms in the Murgia area. Historic country manors, dry stonewalls and endless rocky hillside trails, are the only traces of man's presence in a countryside that refuses to be defeated by urban development. The barrel cellar is deep inside the winery. It is dominated by a double barrel vault ceiling that was built using the same tough bricks and is able to store up to 1,000 oak barrels. From the second floor there is a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside, the village of Minervino appears on the opposite hill with its brilliant white stone buildings reflecting in the sun while to the west the volcano Vulture vigilantly keeps watch,
Territory
Wandering through the countryside is an unforgettable experience in itself. Visitors stumble into perfectly preserved medieval villages whose harbors witnessed departures of armies towards the Holy Land and the coming and going of merchant vessels to the major Mediterranean ports.
The view from Castel del Monte, a splendid and unique medieval military castle built under Emperor Federick II and made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, opens up revealing the area's natural boundaries, inhabitants, the wide variety of local vegetation and geometrically perfect patterns of alternating olive groves and rows of vineyards.
The Murgia territory has always been affected by karsification of its landscape: rainwater rich in carbon dioxide slowly eroded the underlying limestone bedrock in the course of millennia, this phenomenon has brought about spectacular formations both on the surface and beneath with the development of extensive underground caves and caverns. Fractures, chasms, gullies, ravines, sinkholes and ponors are the most obvious signs of these extraordinary natural transformations. This striking scenario allows us to understand and appreciate the history of this area and its communities. A cultural heritage that echoes the myths and legends of its past and that has accompanied man's presence over the centuries.
The Varietals
Local varietals like Aglianico, Nero di Troia and Fiano pugliese represent the heart of the Castel del Monte agronomic history, even though the enological panorama of the Castel del Monte area becomes even more unique due to the presence of international varieties that prove to be highly beneficial to traditional local cultivations. Specifically these grapevine varieties maintain their unique identity while at the same time adapt to the area's climatic conditions becoming part of the natural habitat in the calcareous clay soils and cool breezy climate of Alta Murgia.
