A Renaissance pearl, a papal city, a center of Etruscan origin. Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona. This is the historic terrain and culture of our wine. Nestled among hills and knolls, inspired by an ancient tradition of winemaking, our production of excellence has been cultivated here for over fifty years. Poliziano was started in 1961 with an initial nucleus of 22 hectares. It has grown over the years to reach its present size of 120 hectares, all planted in vineyards. Its name is an homage to the humanist poet Angelo Ambrogini (1454-1494), known as "Il Poliziano", who was born in Montepulciano.
There are approximately 30 hectares of vineyards clustered around the winery's buildings as well as a number of individual properties that range in size from eight to thirty hectares; together these constitute the entire property. The vines are planted at altitudes ranging from 280 to 400 metres above sea level, in an environment that is well suited to them, with soil that is primarily volcanic clay and slightly rocky. The geological survey of the Comune of Montepulciano identifies the most important sections of our property with the names: Asinone, Caggiole, Valiano, Lama, Casale and Pozzi.
The Cellars
where the delicate operations of vinification, maturation and refinement take place, are meticulously cared for down to the smallest detail, and are a testament to the winery's fifty-year history.
In this cellar the wines are matured in wood.Inaugurated in 2005, it represents a further phase in the structural renovation of the winery. It is a barrel cellar with a total capacity of about 4,000, which includes both barriques and tonneaux.
The size of the winery today is 65 hectares in total, of which 27 hectares are planted in vineyards. Lohsa was acquired in two different years, but its lands are adjoining and comprise one tract within the winery. It is located in a natural amphitheater with a southern exposure. At present, the producing vines are divided as follows: 18 hectares are dedicated to the production of "Morellino di Scansano" (primarily Sangiovese with some Ciliegiolo, Malvasia Nera and Canaiolo).
The tunnel that connects the vinification cellar with the barrel cellar represents, in the best Bordeaux tradition, the enological history of the Poliziano Winery. All the vintage years of our most prestigious wines, such as "Asinone" and "Le Stanze", are preserved in wooden cases. The vintage year is imprinted on the outside of each case.In addition to 0.75 l bottles, there are also special sizes: magnums and double magnums.
The space that was formerly used to mature the wines in wood is now dedicated to bottling. It is situated next to the rooms, constructed in the 1990's, in which the wines are refined in bottles.
