Antinori La Braccesca
Tenuta Braccesca was born in the early 90s, thanks to the intuition of the Marchesi Antinori. The company covers an area of 340 hectares, divided into 237 in Cortona and 103 in Montepulciano. The Cortona area is famous for its quality wines only in recent years. Becoming DOC in 1999, it has seen a decisive conversion of its vineyards from white to red berried grapes. Thanks to this change, we return to our origins: in the past, red wines prevailed in this area and the choice of grape varieties such as Merlot and Syrah was therefore grafted onto an ancient local tradition and renewed it. The Nobile di Montepulciano in 1966 is one of the first wines in Italy to obtain the DOC, and this gives impetus to the replacement of the old vineyards with mixed cultivation with more specialized systems, even if everything takes place within the framework of the ancient local traditions in terms of processing and wine conservation. The DOCG establishes that the grape variety at the base of the Nobile is Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) at least 70%, with the possible addition of authorized grape varieties. Prugnolo Gentile - a clone of Sangiovese grosso, selected in the area since the 1700s - remains however the grape of reference for the Nobile: its name derives from the color and scent of the berries, which when ripe resemble plums.
