At Carmignano the vines have been cultivated already pre-Roman era, about 3000 years ago, as the Wine jars and tasting cups found in Etruscan tombs demonstrate. In the archives of state of Florence was found a parchment dated 804: it is a lease that as early as 1200 years ago in Capezzana vines and olives were cultivated for the production of oil and wine.
In the early Renaissance, Monna Nera Bonaccorsi built the first 'Nobleman's house' and nine farm houses with the wine-making buildings; It was 1475. Other generations and families followed on the estate property: the Biscotti, related to Medici, and the Marchesi Bourbon del Monte. In the eighteenth century a married Biscotti Bourbon enlarged the farm and bought new farms; also he introduced an administrative method exemplary, whose documents are still preserved in the historical archives of the company.
After the Bourbon del Monte, the company passed to the Adimari Morelli and then to Franchetti and Rothschild, the widow Sara de Rothschild, and to finally arrive to the Contini Bonacossi, our Family, in 1920.
Early last century, Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi, with his wife Victoria and sons Alessandro and Augusto Victorina, returned to Italy from Spain, where he was dedicated to the antiques market of the highest level that allowed him to begin what It would become one of the largest private collections of Italian paintings, sculptures, furniture and ceramics. After his death, at his will and work of the children, the core of this exceptional collection formed the donation Contini Bonacossi, which today is an integral part of the Uffizi Gallery; preserved in ten halls, open only by appointment. In the twenties Alexander bought the property Capezzana, then expanded with the purchase by the marquis Niccolini Aman, two neighboring farms, "The Puoggetto" and "Trefiano". Thus it was born the Capezzana Estate, divided into 3 Estates and more than 120 farms, dedicated to the production of high-quality wine and olive oil. Alexander's passion for collecting led him to store bottles, so that today Capezzana boasts a collection of historic vintages since 1925. In 1945 Augustus Alexander was joined by his son Ugo, a veteran of the war and who took a degree in agriculture and that gradually took the direction of the estate and converted it from sharecropping to modern company.
Ghiaie della Furba
This wine was created by Ugo and Vittorio Contini Bonacossi in 1979 with the idea of producing a Bordeaux blend in Carmignano. The first vineyard was located on gravelly soil adjacent to the Furbastream, after which the wine is named. In 1998 the blend was changed and today the wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah andMerlot grapes.
