Le Macchiole was founded in 1983 on the desire of Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli to turn their passion for wine into their life dream. It was a revolutionary project rooted in their hometown of Bolgheri, at the time not as famous as now. The idea was simple but decisive: to originate in the vineyard, investing completely in research and experimentation in planting including varieties lesser used in Bolgheri.
1987 marked the initial bottling's of the Le Macchiole production, though with a selection now no longer in existence. Only in 1989, when Paleo Rosso was born, was there the first interpretation of our Bolgherese style.
The 1990's would be crucial for the definition of the winery: a greater awareness for the disposition of the land, the decision to introduce high density planting and the innovative and risky decision to produce mono-varietal wines.
From this work results in 1994, Messorio (100% Merlot) and Scrio (100% Syrah) arrived, and following in 2001 Paleo Rosso transforms to 100% Cabernet Franc. Eugenio achieved, with commitment and determination, the esteem of one of the great names from the territory, but, in 2002, when finally starting to reap the fruits of his work, he tragically passed away.
Cinzia then took over the reins of the farm with the help of a team of young talent in all roles of the business. Within few years these personalities gave the imprint of their professionalism, ability, passion and care for detail from the vine to the wine. From all of these energies Cinzia has always sought to produce wines demonstrating their unique position, wines not reproducible.
There are 24 hectares of estate owned vineyards, organically farmed with each harvest producing 5 wines: Paleo Bianco - Toscana IGT, Bolgheri Rosso - DOC Bolgheri, Paleo Rosso - Toscana IGT, Scrio - Toscana IGT and Messorio - Toscana IGT.
VINEYARDS
Viticulture is the fulcrum of all the efforts in Le Macchiole.
Since inception the winery is attentive and innovative in the vineyard: the first to adopt the high density planting and to focus on the Cabernet Franc variety suited to the Bolgherese territory. Respect for the life and the natural environment is central: hence the decision in 2002 to manage the vines organically.
The terrain on which the vineyard farm thrives can be divided into two macro-zones of different conformation: one a medium-textured soil with abundant structure and good presence of limestone, and the other with clay loam with natural pH.
Through careful study of every single parcel, areas have been identified where to plant each single variety. On the basis of the characteristics of every area, rootstocks have been chosen with the most appropriate clones, so as to have, in every year, the best possible quality.
PALEO ROSSO
Paleo Rosso arrived in 1989. It is the wine that has evolved well over time: born originally as a classic Bordeaux blend in 2001, eventually arriving as a 100% Cabernet Franc. This is a beautiful story of obstinacy in challenging the stereotype of Cabernet Franc, which is already difficult to produce, and even more so as a pure varietal wine. Today Paleo Rosso is a symbol of Bolgheri despite its distinct individualism and originality within the region; it is one of the most famous Italian Cabernet Franc wines in the world. The word Paleo is a common name referring to the Festuca Pratensis of the family Gramineae, an herb spontaneously growing on the Tuscan coast.
