Tenuta Di Sesta

The word Sesta derives from a Roman milestone where the Pieve di Santa Maria in Sexta stood, the subject of dispute between the bishops of Arezzo and Siena, which fell together with the vast property at the end of the eighth century under the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Sant ' Antimo.
The Tenuta di Sesta was formed following the expansion of the Republic of Siena and the decline of the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, later becoming the possession of the noble Tolomei family, which the Ciacci brothers took over in 1850.
The estate's first bottles of Brunello were produced by Giuseppe Ciacci, father of the current owner Giovanni, in 1966, the same year in which the DOC Brunello was recognized. At that time there were only 12 bottlers in the Montalcino area, which is why Tenuta di Sesta is considered one of the most historic companies.
Structural changes have been made from the current ownership, going from an extension of 10ha to the current 30ha, of which 13.5ha are used as vineyards for the production of Brunello. A selection was made on the best and historical clones existing in the company, which also has an experimental vineyard of 2ha. The estate is located between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Castelnuovo dell’Abate near the Romanesque abbey of Sant’Antimo, on a slope facing south that slopes from 400m to 200m above sea level.
The vineyards are sheltered to the north by the Poggio d’Arna from the cold north winds and enjoy the proximity of Mount Amiata, from which warm Maremma currents come. Due to its favorable position it is possible to count on an earlier ripening of the grapes compared to other areas of the district. The medium clayey soils, rich in limestone, mixed with large tuffaceous areas, were formed by the decomposition of original rocks such as galestro and alberese, therefore tendentially lean.
