Friulano

A couple of years ago, we inaugurated our new cellar, built entirely below ground level to ensure maximum functionality: the vineyards do the rest. The key characteristic of our estate is that we are lucky enough to be able to source grapes from three distinct terroirs, at Rosazzo, Buttrio and Rocca Bernarda. Initially, grapes from each subzone are always vinified separately so that we can gather statistical data to improve our understanding of each zone and vine type.

VINEYARDS

ROCCA BERNARDA

We have ten hectares under vine at Rocca Bernarda. Some of the plants are very old, double arch-trained and Guyot-trained, and some are recent plantings (ten years old), Guyot-trained and planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare. Located on a hillslope about 140 metres above sea level, facing east, south east and south west, the vines enjoy the benefit of sea breezes and in particular of a wide daily range of temperatures, thanks primarily to their position with respect to the channel that brings the bora, a north east wind that blows cool in summer and cold in winter. The wine that best expresses these site climate characteristics is tullio zamò, a wood-fermented Pinot Bianco.

BUTTRIO

Buttrio is the home of one of the most ancient wine fairs in Italy and its hillslope vineyards have been famous since time immemorial. The aspects, terrain and age of the vines in this zone bring out the best in tocai friulano, as well as in red wines like refosco dal penducolo rosso, merlot and cabernet. The vineyard extends over five hectares, which yield, among other grapes, part of the fruit for the vinification of our two cinquant' anni crus: tocai and merlot

ROSAZZO

Rosazzo is perhaps one of the most beautiful hills in Friuli. On clear days, you can admire both the Alps and the Adriatic Sea from its summit. But Rosazzo has more to offer than just the beauty of the countryside. It also a unique site climate, which makes it possible despite the latitude to cultivate olives, a typically Mediterranean plant.
The combination of the daily range of temperatures, the superb position of all the vineyards and the soil, an Eocene marl poor in organic nutrients but rich in minerals, make Rosazzo ideal for viticulture.
Our vineyard covers 15 hectares densely planted at 5,500 Guyot-trained vines per hectare. We also rent a further ten hectares, mainly planted with very old vines. Most of these are double arch-trained, the rest being Guyot-trained.
